There was a recent improvement included in Update Rollup 10 that everyone should be aware of. With Update Rollup (UR) 10 applied, metadata updates are now automatically applied when both creating new, and importing existing CRM organizations. Prior to UR 10, it was necessary to reapply update rollups after doing either of these activities. I've included more details below:
Scenario 1: Creating a new CRM organization
Let's say that you have a CRM 4.0 deployment with UR 7 applied to the CRM server. The UR applies both server-side and metadata (database) updates. You then decide to create a new organization through the CRM Deployment Manager. In order for the metadata updates to correctly update the newly created CRM organization's database, it would be necessary to reapply UR 7.
In the above scenario, if the CRM server origially had UR 10 or higher installed, then the UR would automatically be applied when creating a new organization, and It would not be necessary to reapply the UR.
Scenario 2: Importing an existing CRM organization
Let's assume that you have a CRM 4.0 deployment with UR 7 applied to the CRM server. You now have a need to import an existing CRM organization into your CRM deployment. The organization being imported may have already had an update rollup applied while it was in its previous CRM deployment. If an update rollup prior to UR 10 was installed in the original environment, then it would be necessary to reapply UR 7 in the new environment after the organization was successfully imported. If Update Rollup 10 or later was applied to the original environment, then it would not be necessary to reapply UR 7.
Now, if UR 10 or later was installed in the target CRM deployment where the import ogranization was being performed, any necessary updates to the metadata would be automatically performed. It would not be necessary to reapply the UR in this scenario.
Hopefully my (probably too) long explanation helps answer any questions that you may have on this topic. To recap, as long as you have UR 10 or later installed, you won't need to reapply update rollups after creating new, or importing existing CRM organizations.
